Let’s say you wish to get into IIT Bombay.
You are in Grade 11.
You HATE maths.
How do we work with this?
That’s our secret sauce - our Learning Plans.
Our very first learner - Saloni - had come to us in Grade 9.
She hated physics but had to manage scoring well till Grade 10.
She wanted to switch to humanities and the colleges she aimed to target required a good percentage.
Our job was to prepare such a learning plan that allowed her to score great in a subject she hated.
Our first action was to conduct an Aptitude Test.
We wanted to figure out whether:
She struggled with understanding concepts
She struggled with applying concepts
She struggled with understanding questions
She struggled with confidence
This test allowed us to quantify these aspects and score her according to these target questions.
That way, we figured out the problem lied in application and in confidence.
We had a clear learning goal.
We also had a clear set of learning challenges.
Now, it was time to work.
Our learning plans are a set of monthly tasks.
We:
Break down the syllabus into small, achievable chunks
Create weekly assessments
Build solving strategies
Adjust for our learner’s pace
Get results.
We segregated all the concepts to those that she could understand the best, those she required practice in, and those that she did not understand at all.
We put extra emphasis on the latter, while still keeping a touch on all the other concepts.
She was tasked to slowly, but steadily, improve her score with specific concepts every single month.
And that’s the beauty of it all
Bringing it back to the example I wrote initially.
Grade 11. Wants to go to IIT Bombay. Hates Math.
The initial aptitude test will want to confirm why math is such a problem.
We will also want to work on this goal a little bit to make it more actionable.
In what sense?
Why IIT Bombay?
What do you want to study there?
What do you imagine doing after that?
That allows us to plan out the next two years month-by-month.
This is the beauty of a learning plan.
